Step by step
-
Understand your right to an assessment
Parent carers of disabled children under 18 can request a parent-carer needs assessment under the Children and Families Act 2014. Adult carer assessments under the Care Act 2014 are the separate route when the person cared for is 18 or over. The assessment looks at wellbeing, the caring role and support that could make life safer or more manageable.
-
Request a PCNA
Contact Northamptonshire Carers or your Children's Trust/social-care worker and ask specifically for a Parent Carer Needs Assessment. Northamptonshire Carers' current information page explains how to start a carer's assessment; ask which local route applies to your family.
-
What happens during the assessment
A trained worker will meet you (by phone or in person) to discuss your caring role, the impact on your health, work and relationships, and what support you need. This could include short breaks, practical equipment, training, counselling, grants or direct payments.
-
Accessing support afterwards
After the assessment you will receive a support plan and may be offered services or funding. Northamptonshire Carers also run support groups, social activities and a Carers Assessment Team.
