Step by step

  1. Start with your therapists

Speak to your child's NHS physiotherapist or paediatrician. Hydrotherapy requires clinical indication and risk assessment.

  2. Referral route

Professionals refer via the NHS Children & Young People's Referral Management Centre (RMC). Parents can ask school SENCO/GP/therapy team to refer.

  3. Where sessions happen

The therapy team will explain whether a suitable pool or school-based option is available; do not assume a particular pool, frequency or funded course of treatment.

  4. What to prepare

Bring therapy goals, risk/medical info (seizures, wounds), handling plan, and sling/hoist compatibility if used.

  5. If not eligible

Ask your physio for a water-based home programme or alternatives and document reasons.
