Step by step
-
Understand the three different savings
1) The disabled band reduction moves your bill down one band if your home has adapted space for a disabled resident. 2) The severe mental impairment disregard means a qualifying resident is not counted, which can cut the bill by 25%, 50% or 100%. 3) Council Tax Reduction is separate again and is based on low income. You may qualify for more than one.
-
Check the disabled band reduction
You may qualify if a disabled person lives in your home and needs an extra room used because of their disability, an extra bathroom or kitchen, or enough space to use a wheelchair indoors. The disabled person can be an adult or a child.
-
Check the severe mental impairment (SMI) disregard
This applies where a resident aged 18 or over has a doctor-certified severe and permanent impairment of intelligence and social functioning (for example a severe learning disability, dementia, or the effects of a stroke) and receives a qualifying benefit such as PIP daily living, Attendance Allowance, or Universal Credit with a limited capability element. You will need a doctor to confirm the diagnosis.
-
Apply to the right council
Apply online through your council. In North Northamptonshire (Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Rushden, East Northants) use northnorthants.gov.uk. In West Northamptonshire (Northampton, Daventry, South Northants, Towcester) use westnorthants.gov.uk. Have supporting evidence, and for the SMI discount a doctor's confirmation, ready.
-
Ask for backdating and get advice if unsure
These reductions can sometimes be backdated, so it is worth asking. If you are not sure which savings apply, a free benefits check from Citizens Advice or Community Law Service can make sure you claim everything and appeal if you are turned down.
